It is very important to review and dispute any errors on your credit report. Most credit reports (80%) are said to contain errors: this article from CBS News found just that.
Steps to Disputing Credit Report Errors
STEP 1: Review the report for any errors and make a list of inaccuracies.
STEP 2: Send letter detailing inaccuracies and copies (NOT ORIGINALS) of supporting documentation to the Credit Reporting Agencies.

STEP 3: Send letter detailing inaccuracies and copies (NOT ORIGINALS) of supporting documentation to the creditor or information furnisher.
What happens next?
Credit Reporting Agencies and Creditors have 30 days to investigate the items you question and five business days to inform you of the results.
If the investigation reveals the items in question are inaccurate they are responsible for:
- Providing you the results in writing.
- Correcting your report.
- Providing a free copy of your credit report.
- If requested, sending notices to anyone who received your report in the last 6 months or up to two years for employment purposes.
